Renee
DeTar, RYT 500 Anatomy - NEW Perspectives
of Alignment Plus Vocal Skills: Becoming an Exceptional
Teacher/Student of Yoga
Friday and Sat., June 20 and 21, 2008 With
Renee founded of our sister school in Wichita, Kansas.
A 22-year practitioner, she is certified at many levels
of energy therapies and holds her M.A. in Liberal Studies
and B.A. in Education from Wichita State University.
Renee reviews yoga teacher trainer applications across
the United States and Europe for Yoga Alliance. Her primary
yoga teacher is Aadil Palkhivala, and for the last 17
years has continued her study with him and assists in
teacher trainings in the U.S. and London. She is an endearing
friend, a wonderful mother, and one of our personal favorite
yoga teachers.
The weekend allows us to absorb form
and function of the muscles & skeleton and major
joints in asana, while combining both lecture and practice
of postures, we move to deeper work:
Friday, June 20, 2 to 4:30 p.m. Principles of Alignment.
Understanding the biomechanical principles of alignment set the
skilled teacher apart from the rest. Optimal alignment attunes
us to the deep order of the organic body, in turn expanding awareness
injury prevention. As BKS Iyengar says, the body is the most important
vehicle for ultimate feedback to our physical, mental, and emotional
body and ultimately to our souls. We practice asana in standing,
twisting, forward bending, backward bending, and inversion.
Friday, June 20, 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Biomechanics of Movement in Asana.
The skilled teacher of yoga knows more than how to take a pose
but knows the subtle “Movements” which create space,
alignment, energy and balance. For example, many new teachers fail
to teach the movement of the coccyx in Trikonasana. Renee will
take us through the key movements in fundamental postures that
students need to be strong and stable.
Sat., June 21, 9:30 to Noon
Principles of Safe Adjustments for healthy or hurting student.
The exceptional teacher of yoga trust the knowledge: Speak, Show,
Touch. When touch is proper and safe and honored with integrity
to do no harm , we lift our students to new levels of integration
and awareness. Renee shows us how to help common injuries to the
a. knees b. hamstrings. c. complaints of sciatica and back pain
and d. shoulder injury or soreness. What is going on that you need
to know from the anatomical bone and muscle and nerve perspective?
Renee’s clear instruction in helping these challenges give
you knowledge you will use for life.
Sat., June 21, 2 to 4:30 p.m.
Principles of Voice and Pacing.
Yes our voice has a lot to do with anatomy. Once the new teacher
of yoga understands how to use the biomechanics of speech, the
voice projects with authority and clarity. In this session, you
will be asked to demonstrate a standing posture such as Tadasana
or Virabhadrasana II and practice teaching to become more skilled
and confident.
Attendance at all sessions required for teacher’s
training. Fee of $255 paid by May 25 DOES
NOT INCLUDE the book. Pre-order from Amazon or direct
from publisher: The Key Muscles of Hatha Yoga; Scientific
Keys Volume I, by Ray Long MD; 2006 3rd edition; www.bhandayoga.com.

Awaken Your Yoga to More Health & Freedom
July 24, 25, 26, 2008
The body has its own natural design and
intelligence, and we need only to bring the body to a place
where it can 'remember' and re-establish its own wisdom,
even as it continues to face its own structural, genetic or trauma-induced
challenges. This perspective upon health and healing is the
larger understanding of yoga.
‘Realization’ is
the profound recognition of the divine wisdom at the core
of our being. Yoga is the process of this unfolding. We focus
on structural
therapeutic issues having to do with muscles and joints. We expand our horizons
to look into the therapeutic value of pranayama (breath work) and meditation.
Doug has long been a favorite guest of The Yoga Studio,
and always offers a rich and bountiful experience of yoga.
See his bio below.
Teacher’s Training Day
Thursday July 24 Learn to Sequence Successful Classes 9:30 a.m. to Noon
Philosophy: Ayurveda Principles – Elements, Doshas & Gunas
2:00 to 4:30 pm
In morning Teacher’s Training we rely upon Doug’s insights to formulate
new and powerful sequencing targeting the spine, hips and shoulders. The body
has a few basic postural patterns that are showing up with greater frequency
in our contemporary world. These are easily recognizable, as well as the imbalances
they typically create, and there are well-defined sets of exercises and asanas
that directly address these imbalances. Plus, we will work hands on adjustments
on one another, learning to spot mis-alignment with our eyes and senses.
In the afternoon, we bring back Doug’s delightful presentation on Ayurvedic
knowledge of the how Earth, Water, Air and Fire inter-relate to the doshas of
Kapha, Pitta, and Vata. He leads us to understand how emotions, diet, movement,
prana, asana and life style work together to add ever increasing quality of life.
Doug’s presentation of this complex philosophy will make it clear as
a bell and easy to interpret for every day living and help you to pass it on
to
your students with greater understanding and clarity. $140 day fee

Doug has a degree in philosophy from at Georgetown University,
a Master's Degree in Philosophy from Fordham University.
He was teaching college-level philosophy courses at Fordham
when he met the renowned meditation master, Swami Muktananda.
Doug says, "Through his example and teaching I saw
that any pursuit of wisdom cannot be purely intellectual,
but must be grounded in practice and experience. I began
with the practice of meditation, and was introduced to Hatha
yoga in 1985. In 1986 I traveled to India to spend the next
seven years there studying yoga in all its aspects in Gurudev
Siddha Peeth, the ashram and international retreat center
for learning yoga and meditation established by Swami Muktananda
in the countryside outside of Bombay."

ANXIETY, ANGER AND DEPRESSION
YOGA SESSION
Two Sessions: Thursday & Friday
Many people in our culture suffer from anxiety, anger and/or
depression. This workshop will combine the Western theories
about these conditions with a brief introduction to what
Ayurveda (the Indian science of medicine) teaches as well.
We will practice the asanas and pranayamas that can be helpful.
How much yoga do you need to be free of anger, anxiety,
and depression? We'll explore this question by combining
a philosophical discussion and asana practice, with the aim
of bringing sweetness, humor, and clarity into our lives.
Background: Ayurveda is one of the oldest
systems of natural health care, originating in the ancient
traditions of India over 5,000 years ago. Now considered
one of the leading forms of holistic medicine available in
the ‘West, it addresses all factors that influence
the quality of our lives. The term Ayurveda combines two
Sanskrit words—ayur, which means life, and veda, which
means science of knowledge. The principles of Ayurveda state
that nothing exists in isolation, so that everything you
interact with, your diet, family, work or relationships,
has an effect on your health and wellbeing. One guiding principle
of Ayurveda is that mind and body are connected and that
the mind has a profound influence over our health and well-being.
While conventional Western medicine is still grounded in
the paradigm of mind-body separation, Ayurveda holds that
health is more than the absence of disease; it is a dynamic
state of balance and integration of body, mind, and spirit.
